A classic for a new era

Theatre at its best will return to our shores with a new exciting perspective on The Cherry Orchard, Chekhov&rsquo;s last masterpiece. Featuring celebrated French actress Isabelle Huppert on the lead role, staged by Portuguese director Tiago Rodrigues, this play mirrors the uncertainties of our time. Performed on a strikingly minimalist set, the plot serves as a magnifying glass over our world in all its diversity.

Mostly fuelled by Huppert&rsquo;s sublime interpretation of a complex character, this tragicomedy revolves around Lyubov, a strange and elusive woman who returns home when her family estate is about to be sold to pay off debts. The property&rsquo;s uncertain future, and mostly that of a world she left behind, set the tone to a piece premiered in 1904, a time when Western societies lived the dawn of capitalist globalization. Drawing an analogy with our era, when changes seem too fast to keep up with, the play masterfully portrays the way characters deal with the prospect of a new world, yet to be understood by some of them.

Currently directing the reputed Festival d&rsquo;Avignon, Rodrigues stands by his piece as a celebration of change, a whirlwind of creative deconstruction. Now it&rsquo;s up to the audience to reflect on and decide. Must centenary orchards be replaced by a new order? Ideas, feelings and perceptions that exuberantly flourish from this pensive drama!&nbsp;
